Improvement in 100-m Sprint Performance at an Altitude of 2250 m

چکیده
A fair system of recognizing records in athletics should consider the influence of environmental conditions on performance. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of an altitude of 2250 m on the time for a 100-m sprint. Competition results from the 13 Olympic Games between 1964 and 2012 were corrected for the effects of wind and de-trended for the historical improvement in performance. The time advantage due to competing at an altitude of 2250 m was calculated from the difference between the mean race time at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City and the mean race times at the low-altitude competition venues. The observed time advantage of Mexico City was 0.19 ( ̆0.02) s for men and 0.21 ( ̆0.05) s for women ( ̆90% confidence interval). These results indicate that 100-m sprinters derive a substantial performance advantage when competing at a high-altitude venue and that an altitude of 1000 m provides an advantage equivalent to a 2 m/s assisting wind (0.10 s). Therefore, the altitude of the competition venue as well as the wind speed during the race should be considered when recognizing record performances.

Effects of altitude on performance of elite track-and-field athletes.
PURPOSE Lower barometric air pressure at altitude can affect competitive performance of athletes in some sports. Reported here are the effects of various altitudes on elite track-and-field athletes' performance. METHODS Lifetime track-and-field performances of athletes placed in the top 16 in at least 1 major international competition between 2000 and 2009 were downloaded from the database at...

TO THE EDITOR: Decades of research in exercise physiology have supported the common view that endurance performance suffers most greatly at altitude because oxidative energy production is limited (4). In contrast, Weyand et al. (5) reported that fit males are capable of running just as fast during “all-out” treadmill efforts of 1 min in hypoxic compared with normoxic conditions (13.00% and 20.9...
متن کاملPredicting sprint performance of front-crawl swimming in young swimmers with an emphasis on biomechanical, muscle architectural and anthropometrical factors
Youth swimming performance may be influenced by anthropometric, physiology, and biomechanical factors. The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationships between 50-m front-crawl swimming performance and relevant anthropometrical (body height, body mass, body mass index, arm span, shoulders width, thigh, leg and upper arm lengths), muscle architectural (muscle thickness, pennation ...
متن کاملHigh-intensity kayak performance after adaptation to intermittent hypoxia.
CONTEXT Live-high train-low altitude training produces worthwhile gains in performance for endurance athletes, but the benefits of adaptation to various forms of artificial altitude are less clear. PURPOSE To quantify the effects of intermittent hypoxic exposure on kayak performance. METHODS In a crossover design with a 6-week washout, we randomized 10 subelite male sprint kayak paddlers to...
متن کاملAcclimatization to altitude and normoxic training improve 400-m running performance at sea level.
To investigate the benefits of 'living high and training low' on anaerobic performance at sea level, eight 400-m runners lived for 10 days in normobaric hypoxia in an altitude house (oxygen content = 15.8%) and trained outdoors in ambient normoxia at sea level. A maximal anaerobic running test and 400-m race were performed before and within 1 week of living in the altitude house to determine th...
